Africa Utopia 2016 - an explosion of music, dance, discourse and fashion

Ghanaian-American actress Maame Adjei, who plays Zainab in the hit web series An African City, will be discussing how African designers are pushing boundaries in fashion by challenging stereotypes and moving beyond tradition.

 Her talk, entitled 'Beyond Prints' on 3 September, is one of a series of events being staged during the Africa Utopia festival in London’s Southbank Centre from 31 August until 4 September.

 Africa Utopia has been going since 2012 and is a celebration of all things African.  From food to fashion, spirituality to dance and discourse to music, the festival aims to offer something for everyone.

There will be in-depth social and political discussions on gender, power and youth culture during the weekend.

Why not come along to the one-hour talk from 1pm on Sunday entitled Gender and Power: African Feminisms Today? The slot will include a workshop on African feminism in the diaspora led by women’s rights activist Fatimah Kelleher.

Youth culture
A thought-provoking look at youth culture from some emerging talent from the Africa diaspora will feature on 4 September.

Speakers include Ghanaian-British photographer and founder of Nii Journal, trans model Campbell Addy and Saltfish & Ackee actor and writer Michelle Tiwo. This panel will be exploring how the young creative minds of Africa and the diaspora are leading the way when it comes to culture, fashion, lifestyle, activism and tech with True Africa founder Claude Grunitzky.

 Fashion show
As well as formal fashion shows, there is a chance for us ordinary folk with a penchant for wearing African-inspired styles, to showcase them at an informal catwalk. Come along on Saturday 3 September for the ‘Africa Utopia People’s Catwalk', which starts from 16:10.

Not forgetting the children, the list of activities are many but a re-make of Rapunzel looks particularly inviting. Refilwe is an African retelling of the fairy tale South African journalist and novelist Zukiswa Wanner, which showcases on Sunday 4 September.

And a fitting end to the festivities will be the screening of the Afripedia film on Sunday from 4pm. This part traditional documentary, part web magazine, the dynamic Afripedia series visits cultural hubs and artists on the continent. Followed by a post-screening discussion with founder of the Nzinga Effect and CNN Africa editor Eliza Anyangwe, Johny Pitts of Afropeans and founder of NU:BLK Gabrielle Smith.

Africa Utopia includes household names such as musician Baaba Maal and journalist Gary Younge, as well as a showcase of African designs and craft. I went last year for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

A dinkra is a series of ideographic symbols from Ghana and the Ivory Coast depicting age-old proverbs that incorporate aspects of Asante culture, flora and fauna. Ghanaian sitcom star leaves lasting legacy in Kwahu

The late Gyearbuor Asante, who famously played long-term mature student Matthew in hit British sitcom Desmond’s , was also a royal. Gyearbuor Asante: Image credit Carole Latimer He came from Tafo, Kwahu, in Ghana's Eastern Region but rather than follow tradition and become a chief, the young thespian got himself circumcised instead. The reason, according to details from charity the Friends of Tafo (Kwahu), was to rule himself out of enstoolment. He then left Ghana in the late 1960s to become an actor and the rest, as they say, is history. But life has a funny way of panning out and although Gyearbuor never became a chief, his close friend Humphrey Barclay, who incidentally was the executive producer of Desmond's , did!  "I met Gyearbuor (or Christopher as he was known in UK then) in 1972, when he was doing such shows as Crown Court and so on," he told MisBeee. Vlog: British-Nigerian author's books set for February 2018 revamp

The son of the late British-Nigerian author Buchi Emecheta is leading a project to digitise and re-launch all her works. By February 2018, her most well-known novels: 'In the Ditch’, ‘The Bride Price’ and ‘The Slave' will be re-launched with more titles set to follow, Onwordi told MisBeee at the sidelines of literary festival Africa Writes 2017 earlier this month. The plan to digitise and republish Buchi's entire collection of over 20 books – complete with new book covers - emerged after the Ibusa-born London-based author passed away in January this year. Testing boundaries: an interview with Gold Coast film co-producer Kwame Boadi

In October, I had the opportunity to speak with Ghanaian TV director Kwame Boadi of inGenius Africa about his move into feature film production. Producers Michael Haslund and Kwame Boadi © Michael Haslund Many of you know may know him for such TV series as Sunshine Avenue, Abiba , and Sun City . Well, he has recently co-produced an arthouse film set in Ghana called Gold Coast that looks at Denmark’s presence in Ghana during the 1830s. The 2015 arthouse film was written and direction by Daniel Dencik and is a depiction of 19th century life three years after the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade was officially but not totally banned in 1833. Slavery was finally abolished in Danish colonies in 1848, according to details from the BBC. The film arrived in London on 11 October and was screened at local cinemas for a week.
